How to Define Traveling

Travel is the moving motion of individuals between different distant geographic locations. It can also be one-way or round-trip, with or without cargo, and generally can be undertaken by foot, horseback, bike, car, train or other means. The word “travel” can have many variations, but in most cases refers to a common activity.

Let’s examine some travel facts and see what they really mean. When I say that travel is an individual’s mode of travel, it means that there are no fixed routes, destinations, or schedules. Travel is a very broad concept encompassing all the ways people move around and about. It includes not only public transport systems, but private transport systems as well (i.e. buses and trams).

So when we refer to “travel”, we must keep in mind that it is a broad term that includes a lot of very tiny little things. A bus ticket from X to Z costs less than one ticket from Z to X, but both are travelling by bus. Even though the ticket costs a similar amount, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are travelling by bus. Likewise a railway ticket bought at one place can be bought at another place for less. So let’s use this simplified travel definition to look at some more general travel terms.

When people travel from one place to another, they are actually travelling from one point to another. A train station is a place where a train leaves from. If you take a tram or a bus, you are travelling from your point of origin to another place. In this sense a city is a collection of these points.

Now let us define travel on a more detailed level. We can look at places as separate entities. They could be cities or countries, but they are still individuals. This makes sense when we look at how different people classify the boundaries of their own space. Some people would say that the space surrounding your house is your actual home, while others would say that your lawn and shrubs constitute your outside space. So when looking at whether you are living in your home or not, it is important to remember that the property you are considering in fact constitutes part of your home.

Finally let us look at business travel. For most people a business trip is just a means to an end. They don’t really think too much about the destination itself. But if you consider travelling as an integral part of your professional life, then you might find that the journey itself is sometimes more fulfilling than the business.
